Miley Cyrus surprised everyone when she had Jesse Helt, a young homeless man, accept her VMA on her behalf to help raise awareness for homeless youth. But now, after appearing on national TV, Oregon police say there is an active warrant for his arrest.
Cyrus watched tearfully from the stars' enclosure alongside Sam Smith and Katy Perry as Jesse Helt described his experiences as a homeless youth in Los Angeles |
According to the Polk County Circuit Court, Helt was arrested in 2010 for criminal mischief in the third degree and convicted of criminal trespassing in the first degree. He allegedly failed to appear in court multiple times and according to police violated his probation, among other offenses.
Cyrus met Helt at My Friend's Place, a center for homeless youth, and was so inspired by his story that she decided to get more involved with the organization. On Tuesday, the pop star responded to the news about her VMA date's arrest warrant on Twitter: "People who are homeless have lived very hard lives. Jesse included. I hope that this can be the start of a national conversation about youth homelessness and how to end it. Does looking down upon the homeless help people excuse their inaction?" Here's hoping that Jesse will be able to get his life back on track.
