As part of its activities to mark the World Stroke Day in Nigeria, Stroke Care International is organizing a Stroke Awareness and Prevention programme at the Ikeja mall targeted at, health care workers, Stroke survivors, Relatives of stroke survivors and the general public.
Academic research shows that the incidence of stroke in America and Europe decreased from 1950s to 1980s and stabilized[i] . However, the situation in Nigeria has worsened.[ii] In the late 1970s, Osuntokun et al (1979) estimated the incidence of stroke in Nigeria to be 26 per 100,000 of the population but by 2005; Ogungbo et al estimated it to be 116 per 100,000 of the population.
According to Ogun et al (2004), six million out of about 126 million the population in Nigeria are likely to develop intracranial aneurysm at a time in their life time. We know how many influential Nigerians; especially from the entertainment industry we have loss to this ailment only recently.
