Michelle Obama Joins Twitter

On January 17th, her 49th birthday, the First Lady launched a new Twitter account: @FLOTUS. Michelle Obama’s account will be managed by White House staff from the Office of the First Lady, her user-account header informs followers. She will speak for herself from time to time, however, according to the inaugural tweet released at 8:35 AM. Michelle’s own tweets will be signed “–mo,” but most of the updates and pictures will likely be posted by staff members. Followers are requested to retweet birthday wishes for the First Lady.

Three and a half hours following the “Hello World!”-style announcement, @FLOTUS released a second tweet: “The First Lady just met with Inaugural citizen co-chair David Hall ahead of #MLKDay of Service: http://www.2013pic.org/service pic.twitter.com/E0vxKz73″ Only an hour later the account had over 33 thousand followers.
Though Michelle has never before had an official White House account, it’s not her first foray into the twittering world. @MichelleObama was launched a year ago, on January 12th 2012, to tweet campaign-related information regarding her husband’s reelection bid. Michelle personally tweeted from time to time on that account, as well, signing posts with her initials. The new @FLOTUS account is the first time the First Lady’s White House staff is tweeting, however — election law required campaign staffers to operate the previous account.
